  Frequently Asked Questions

If you have a question that is not addressed here, please feel free to contact us.

Where is the class located?

  • Class meets in the main sanctuary at Del Rey Church, conveniently located at 8505 Saran Drive, Playa Del Rey, CA 90293, just 5 minutes from LAX and the 90 Marina Freeway. Click here for a map. There is ample free parking in the lot, and the facility is fully air conditioned with bathrooms and drinking water. And the pastor is also a VK member! (Victory Karate and VKfit are not affiliated with Del Rey Church in any manner. It is a mutual partnership for the benefit of the community.)

When do you have class?

  • Class is every Tuesday night. VKfit, which is open to both VKfit and Victory Karate members, starts at 7:15pm and wraps up by 7:45pm. The VKfit members are then excused, and the Victory Karate class then proceeds afterwords until 9:00pm-ish. Students are then encouraged to meet in study groups on their own during the week to work on their material.

We are off Thanksgiving week, the weeks of Christmas and New Year's Day, and any holidays that might fall on class day. We also have field trips, seminars, and guest instructors, which might alter class meeting times and locations.

If you would like to stop by, it would be best to contact us and see when the next class is. Or you can consult the VKfit Workout blog or the Victory Karate Facebook page for any changes in class times or locations, or any upcoming events.

What are the costs?

  • Go here, agree to the terms (make sure you also print out a copy to sign and submit, as you will not be allowed to participate without it) and click submit, then click on the membership you are interested in.

Can I really learn karate with class only meeting once a week?

I've never taken karate or done anything physical before. Can I still join?

  • Yes! But here's the disclaimer: This is NOT a franchise business for the masses. This is a privately-run, championship-caliber program. The workouts are highly rigorous and demanding. Not everyone has the work ethic, desire, or capacity to do what we do. This is what separates us from the commercial karate business down the street. This doesn't mean that everyone has to be a world-class athlete to participate. In fact, your commitment to train and constantly improve is far more important than any physical abilities (Though a good sense of humor certainly helps). Yes, beginners are welcome. But only those who "fit" will be invited and accepted to train with us. The workouts and curriculum both quickly weed out those who lack the commitment to make themselves and those around them the best they can be (iron sharpens iron).

Can I buy a gift certificate to give to someone so that he/she can join?

  • Yes! Just click here:

Gift certificates are available in various amounts from $5 to $1000, and are good towards class or private training membership programs with VKfit or Victory Karate.

What is VKfit?

  • VKfit is the alternative to the crowded, meat market McGyms and McHealth clubs, as well as the lonely workouts at home with the McFitness DVDs that clutter your home and offer you no feedback or interaction. It is the all-body workout and conditioning program for Victory Karate that is open to all. It is a 5-30 minute workout combining the experience of 2 Black Belt world titles and over 20 years of coaching and training martial arts, CrossFit protocols, core training, plyometrics, pilates, gymnastics, as well as conditioning drills used by the US Military Special Forces, city and state law enforcement, MMA/UFC trainers, and collegiate and professional level athletic coaches and trainers. The focus is on constantly improving your fitness, whether you are a professional athlete, or a total sedentary person who has never done anything physical. There is a VKfit class, as well as VKfit Private Training available. There is also a VKfit workout blog where you can follow along during the week and log your results and track your improvement.

Can I really get fit with only one VKfit workout class per week?

  • Yes! But you will need to follow the workouts on the blog either on your own or in private training during the week. The VKfit workout class allows you to learn the proper techniques, as well as compete head to head with the other members. Only in the VKfit class atmosphere will you be able to truly push yourself beyond your own comfort zone.

What's the difference between VKfit and CrossFit, or P90X?

  • There are similarities to the programming, but that is to be expected since the human body varies very little. P90X is a fitness DVD that is dependent solely on the user working out at home by himself. There is no feedback for poor form, or specific encouragement and inspiration from others as you're working out. Purchasers of the P90X program most likely end up having their DVD set on the shelf collecting dust.

CrossFit is more similar, in that it offers a workout blog to follow at home, and commercial affiliate gyms to take classes and get instruction. But the gyms are expensive; you'd need to attend 4 classes per week to get anything close to getting your money's worth. And the workouts at home require heavy weight equipment that can be extremely expensive and take up an enormous amount of space.

VKfit offers a workout blog to follow at home. You can choose to use heavy weight equipment, or inexpensive alternatives found around your home as posted on the blog. There is a class where you can get instruction and coaching, as well as encouragement and inspiration from the others in class as you're working out. It is the best of both worlds. As stated, "VKfit is the alternative to the crowded, meat market McGyms and McHealth clubs, as well as the lonely workouts at home with the McFitness DVDs that clutter your home and offer you no feedback or interaction."

I noticed a lot of God stuff for this program, and I don't believe in God. Can I still train with you?

  • Of course! Anyone who is committed to the training is welcome.
